It Was Written…

back in 06…  i had this gig to do a live painting at an aloe blacc and exile show, that tommy threw at the old sofa lounge in sj.  i was gonna paint this robot design i did in adobe illustrator on a 4×4 wood panel.  the design was pretty dope at the time….. and at the time.. i didn’t know any 3d…. and  i had this convo with don about how i wanted to make this 2d design of a robot, into a 3d model, and animate it.  it was built of boomboxes and mixers and shit.

anyway… i told don this, and we came to the conclusion that it was going to be put down in the “It Was Writtens” file on his phone.. and we considered this the hall of fame.. or hall of shame… a lot of people sad they were gon do something back then… and some never made it out… and being in that topic of conversation isn;t where you wanted to be..  soo…..i had to do this…., or would ultimately pay the consequence of being a failure in life.  and who wants that title.?

well… i never actually modeled the robot..  but .. after a couple years of holding it down as best i could… i know i’m completely capable now…. and we’ve decided i’ve made it out.  so….  these black books are representative of the time spent enduring this.. all the things i said i was gon do.     and did…

Nike Dunk :: Process + Style Frames

Posted by: Ra
Jul 28, 2010

I’m not a 3d modeler by any means…. so this is my rookie attempt at painting a lemon, gold..  I think I did this initial concept sometime last year, and I’ve just been sitting on it… So last night, I got to finally re-working it and it took a a whole new life.  Below are some stills of the process.

I had to start off by finishing up the rest of the model.  Originally, i found a profile view of a Dunk, and traced in Illustrator.. then I brought it into cinema4D to start molding it in 3d.  A lot of it was just pushing points in the areas i needed them to be.  Since my modeling skils arent so polished… I was able to hide my lack of knowledge with some design.

Once I added the outlines of each polygon with the cell renderer, it totally worked.. and the look is nice in crisp.  Real sharp edges.. hard shadows, and a decent looking model.  Be on the lookout for the animation in the upcoming Reel.

A little fun in Cinema4D, with the cloner object, spline wrap, and a random effector…

Finally… I got a nice clean track… This is a still from the pier footage I shot yesterday, and also a test in 3d camera tracking.  This time though.. it came out real clean.  Learning about visual effects is a tough thing..sometimes real discouraging, when there’s no one to guide you through it.   So much trial an error you gotta go through.. but when you get… you GET IT!

Motion Graphics Dept. :: Concept Contest

Posted by: Ra
Jun 29, 2010

So here it is.. our entry for our motion graphics department challenge (to win an iPad) And I think we have a really good chance.

Concept Description:
The goal of this concept is to move away from artificial 3D environments and place the KOL in a live, real-world setting. The concept would combine live-action shots and photographic stills with tracked and composited 2D/3D graphics. The environments can either be indoor our outdoor, depending on the focus and scope of the client. City streets, office buildings, or hospitals could all be ideal settings. We envision the KOL using real-world surfaces such as windows, walls, doors, and buildings to track and project 3D data onto- either by gesture or by using a hand-held device. 3D interactive data could also be projected from this device in front of the KOL. We imagine the KOL using gestures to wipe on or off slides of data. We also envision using wide shots for data (such as key takeaways) where we can track and composite 3D charts into cityscapes or buildings.

Target: Patients, Sales Reps, Doctors, KOL Video, Mobile

*The Brand EVGen is a made up brand.

The video here was shot on the 5D, 2D tracked in AE & 3D tracked in Boujou, however the 3d camera track is very sloppy… This was more-so a proof of concept video.  Below are some design comps to support our concept.  Shouts to Cliff Chan for a successful collaboration!  Let’s do it again homie.  Check out his work at http://cliffordchan.com
